    “The Signora had no business to do it,” said Miss Bartlett. “She promised us south rooms with a view, close together — instead, north rooms, looking into a courtyard.”

    Lucy Honeychurch and her cousin Charlotte have just arrived at the Pension Bertolini in Florence — tired, hungry, and thoroughly disappointed.

    “I have a view, I have a view,” an old man interrupts across the table. It is Mr. Emerson. “Ladies can have our rooms. We'll take yours. Change.”

    Charlotte is horrified — one does not accept rooms from strange men. Lucy suspects the offer is simple kindness, clumsily delivered.

    Mr. Beebe, a clergyman Lucy once met in Tunbridge Wells, appears at dinner — and gently persuades Charlotte that the exchange is harmless.

    By evening the swap is made. Lucy throws open her window over the Arno: she has her view at last.

    In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since. "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." He didn't say any more, but we've always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that.
